Hans Bien was a stone mason, draftsman, cartographer, and engineer born in Nürnberg, Germany in 1591. He died in Nürnberg on August 6, 1632. Bien is known for his freehand pen-and-ink-drawing of Nürnberg as seen from the west, which he presented to the City Council in 1612. The drawing, which is almost three meters long, is an ingenious panoramic view of the city. Bien's work is significant because it provides a detailed and accurate representation of Nürnberg during the early 17th century. His drawing is also notable for its artistic merit, as it demonstrates Bien's skill as a draftsman and his ability to capture the essence of the city in a single image.
