Biography:

Hatem El Mekki was a prominent Tunisian painter. He was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 1918 and died in Carthage, Tunisia, in 2003. He is considered one of the most important Tunisian painters due to his long career, the diversity and abundance of his work, and the recognition he received both in Tunisia and internationally. His work has appeared on a large number of Tunisian postage stamps from 1957, and he also drew the head of the coin used in Tunisia from 1988 to 1990. Hatem El Mekki is known for his use of bright colors and his depictions of Tunisian landscapes and people. He has had exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world, including the Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University.
