Biography:
, a renowned French painter and lithographer, was born on January 14, 1836, in Grenoble, Isère. As a youth, he received drawing lessons from his father, who was an artist. In 1850, he entered the Ecole de Dessin, where he studied with Lecoq de Boisbaudran.
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1854, Fantin-Latour devoted much time to copying the works of old masters in the Musée du Louvre. Although he befriended several young artists who would later be associated with Impressionism, including Whistler and Manet, Fantin's own work remained conservative in style.
In 1875, Henri Fantin-Latour married a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg. He spent his summers on the country estate of his wife's family at Buré, Orne in Lower Normandy, where he died on August 25, 1904. He was interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse, Paris, France.
Fantin-Latour's work, characterized by its conservative style, reflects the artist's unique blend of Symbolist and Realist influences. His still-life paintings, such as Still Life with Flowers and Fruit, 1865, showcase his mastery of color and composition. As a prominent figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism, Fantin-Latour's legacy continues to inspire artists and art enthusiasts alike.
