Biography:
Henri Joseph van Blarenberghe was a French painter born in Lille, France in 1750 and died in 1826. He was a member of the influential Blarenberghe family of painters, originally from French Flanders. He specialized in battle scenes and became a military painter in the retinue of the French army. He also painted miniatures, gouaches, watercolors and oil on canvas. He was known for his detailed depictions of clothing and decorations, and his paintings often featured gallant scenes, groups of characters dressed in Turkish style, women in unlikely dresses à la circassienne, popular festivals, groups of people devoted to daily work, foreshortenings with family interiors, sports activities, and French patrician homes. He was also a drawing teacher to royal princes and the first conservator of the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille.
