Biography:
Sochi, also known as Heo Ryeon, was a well-known Korean painter and calligrapher born in Korea in 1809 and died in 1892. He became so engrossed in the Southern School of literati painting that he even changed his name to Heo Yu. Sochi was enormously popular in his time and resisted the nationalizing tendency in Korean art. He is best known for his rock paintings, which became extremely popular in Korea during the 19th century. Sochi also wrote a poem on each scroll regarding the spirit of a true gentleman in hardship. He lived in Taeryeongsipcheongwon House, located in Yeoncheon.
