Biography:

Herbert Sonnenfeld was born on September 29, 1906, in the Neukölln neighborhood of Berlin. He began his career as an insurance employee but was laid off due to Nazi anti-Semitic measures. After a trip to Palestine in 1933, he started working as a press photographer for Jewish newspapers and organizations. His photographs document Jewish life in Berlin during the 1930s. Along with Abraham Pisarek and Arno Kikoler, Sonnenfeld is one of the few Jewish photographers who captured this period. He married Leni Sonnenfeld in 1931, and they both documented Jewish life in Berlin until they emigrated to the United States in 1939.
