Biography:
Alexander Hesler was a German-born photographer who is best known for his portrait of Abraham Lincoln taken in 1860. He was born in Prussia in 1823 and immigrated to the United States in 1849. He settled in Springfield, Illinois, where he established his photography studio. Hesler's portrait of Lincoln was taken just a few months before Lincoln was elected President of the United States. The photograph became one of the most iconic images of Lincoln and is widely recognized as one of the best portraits of the 16th President. Hesler continued to work as a photographer until his death in 1895.
