Biography:

Ilya Yefimovich Repin, also known as Illia Repin, was a Ukrainian-born Russian painter. He was born on July 24, 1844, in Chuguev, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. Repin is recognized as one of the most renowned Russian artists of the 19th century. He is best known for his realistic portrayals of Russian life and his revealing portraits of leading Russian literary and artistic figures, including Mikhail Glinka, Modest Mussorgsky, Pavel Tretyakov, and Leo Tolstoy. Repin's masterpieces include Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873), Religious Procession in Kursk Province (1880-1883), Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan (1885), and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1880-1891). He was a member of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Repin spent two years in Paris and Normandy, learning the techniques of painting in the open air. He died on September 29, 1930, in Kuokkala, Finland (now Repino, Saint Petersburg). His home is now a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
