Izumiya Tomotada was a Japanese artist born in Kyoto in the late 18th century. He was one of the most prominent carvers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, known for his elaborately carved netsuke in wood, bone, or porcelain. His works often displayed signatures, indicating his pride in his craftsmanship. One of his most famous works is a shishi (lion) head netsuke, which features an articulated jaw that reveals large teeth and a curling tongue when opened. This netsuke, along with others, was worn as a decorative accessory by merchants during the Edo Period, signaling their affluence and taste. Izumiya Tomotada's works are highly valued for their intricate details and craftsmanship, and are on display in various museums around the world.
