Biography:

The Coutinho brothers, J. B. Coutinho and Felix Coutinho, established perhaps the first commercial photographic firm in East Africa. They had a studio in Zanzibar and then later also one in Dar es Salaam. In the late 1800s, they captured images of the Swahili culture, including portraits of Comorian women. Their work is significant in documenting the history and culture of East Africa during the colonial era.
