Jakob Alt was a renowned German painter and lithographer born on September 27, 1789, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He received his early artistic education in Frankfurt before moving to Vienna, where he entered the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, becoming noted as a landscape painter. Throughout his career, Alt made various journeys throughout Austria and Italy, painting views of the Danube and the city of Vienna.

Early Life and Education

Alt was the son of Barbara Alt, née Horst, and Frankfurt carpenter Johann Leonhart Alt. He received his early artistic education in Frankfurt before moving to Vienna, where he entered the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. This academy played a significant role in shaping the artistic landscape of Europe and beyond.

Artistic Career

Alt's extensive travels throughout Austria and Italy inspired his landscape paintings, which often featured views of the Danube and the city of Vienna. In later life, he painted extensively in watercolor and was also a skilled lithographer. In 1830, the future Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria began a project to commission paintings of the most beautiful views in the Empire. Alt, along with his eldest son, Rudolf von Alt, painted approximately 170 of the 300 works executed before the scheme came to an end in 1849.
