Biography:

Jan van Dornicke, also known as Jan Mertens or Jan Mertens the Younger, was a South Netherlandish painter born in Doornik (Tournai), Belgium, around 1470. He died around 1527. Van Dornicke was active in Antwerp from about 1509 to about 1525 and is known for his Antwerp Mannerism style. He may be the same person as the Master of 1518. His paintings are characterized by fantastic illustrations of religious concepts and narratives, often with macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell. Approximately 25 paintings and eight drawings are confidently attributed to him, with about half a dozen more attributed to his workshop.
