Biography:

Jean Dubout was a French cartoonist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor. He was born in Marseille and studied at the fine arts school in Montpellier where he met his first wife, Renée Altier. After moving to Paris, he illustrated numerous editions of books by famous authors and collaborated on numerous magazines and journals. He also created movie and theatre posters, theatrical sets, and worked in advertising. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1953 and his name appeared in the Petit Larousse dictionary the same year. He illustrated the San-Antonio book series in 1965 and married his second wife, Suzanne Ballivet, in 1967. He died in 1976. A museum about Dubout was dedicated in Palavas-les-Flots in 1992.
