, a renowned Korean landscape painter, was born on February 16, 1676, in the Jongno District of Seoul. His family, although from an illustrious background, was impoverished, preventing him from becoming a scholar-painter (yangban). However, his artistic talents were recognized early, and he began painting daily, leading to a prolific output until old age.

Artistic Style and Significance

Jeong Seon's style is characterized by its realism, departing from traditional Chinese styles. He pioneered the true-view landscape style, focusing on Korea's geographical features. His paintings are classified under the Southern School but exhibit a unique blend of bold brush strokes, intermixed dark and light areas, and layered ink wash.
