Jo Copeland, John-Frederics were American fashion designers. Jo Copeland received the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1944. She was born in New York City in 1899 and died in New York City in 1982. John-Frederics was born in 1929 and died in 1948. They were known for their 'Green Goddess' ensemble created in 1947 using leather as the medium. They were also known for using unusual fabrics in unusual ways and for not being influenced by Parisian fashion. Jo Copeland was educated in New York at Parsons School of Design and Art Students League of New York. She began working as a designer and selling her own designs as a commercial artist to manufacturing firms. She was hired by Pattulo Models Inc in 1920 as a fashion illustrator. After World War II, she began looking at other sources of inspiration for fashion including China and South America. She also persuaded other American fashion designers to become independent from Paris' influence. John-Frederics was a hat designer for stars and society. He changed his name legally to John Frederics and opened his own business after breaking up with his partner in 1948. He was known for his hats and was a hat designer for stars and society.
