Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder, an Austrian-Italian historical and portrait painter, was born on December 31, 1751, in Romeno, Italy. He was the son of Matteo, or Matthias, Lampi, a decorative painter. Von Lampi's artistic talent was evident from a young age, and he studied art under his father in Verona and later in Salzburg.

Early Career

Von Lampi's early career took him to Trento, where he learned to become a portraitist in canvases and miniatures. He then traveled to Innsbruck and Vienna, where the Emperor Joseph II appointed him a professor at the Vienna Academy in 1786. This appointment marked the beginning of von Lampi's successful career as a painter.

Notable Works and Commissions

Von Lampi was known for his exceptional portrait painting skills, and he painted many notable figures, including Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder's portrait of Empress Catherine II. He also received commissions from the Russian Empire, where he settled after the third and final partition of Poland.
