John Gibson Paton was born on 24 May 1824, in a farm cottage at Braehead, Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was the eldest of the 11 children of James and Janet Paton. James Paton was a stocking manufacturer and later a colporteur. From a young age, John showed a strong interest in missionary work and was influenced by his father's devoutness.

Early Life and Education

John started learning the trade of his stocking manufacturing father from the age of 12. He worked for fourteen hours a day, manipulating one of the six 'stocking frames' in his father's workshop. Despite his busy schedule, he still managed to study during the two hours allotted each day for meals. John felt called by God to serve overseas as a missionary and eventually moved to Glasgow, where he undertook theological and medical studies.

Missionary Work

On 23 March 1858, John G. Paton was ordained by the Reformed Presbyterian Church. He married Mary Ann Robson on 2 April 1858, and they sailed to the South Pacific on 16 April. John became a Protestant missionary to the New Hebrides Islands of the South Pacific, where he brought education and Christianity to the natives. He developed small industries for them, such as hat making, and advocated against 'Blackbirding', a form of slavery that involved kidnapping the natives and forcing them to work in New Zealand and elsewhere.
