John Winston Lennon (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was a British singer, songwriter, and peace activist who co-founded the Beatles, one of the most influential and successful bands in the history of popular music. Born in Liverpool, England, Lennon developed an interest in rock and roll music at an early age and formed his first band, The Quarrymen, with his friends Pete Shotton and Eric Griffiths. In 1960, he joined the Beatles, along with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, and became one of the most successful songwriters of all time.
