John Mare, Jr. (born New York City, 1739; died Edenton, North Carolina between June, 1802 and April, 1803) was an American painter, businessman, and public figure. He was born in New York City, the oldest child of John and Mary Bes Mare. His father was from Devonshire, England. Mare was an American painter, businessman, and public figure. He created bust length likenesses, often in three-quarter view, and took notable care in rendering the details of textiles and decorations in his works. He died in Edenton, North Carolina between June, 1802 and April, 1803.
