Biography:
Jonathan J. Shannon is an American artist born in Arizona in 1938. He studied at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1960. Shannon is known for his work in textile art, particularly quilting. He has been the owner of John Shannon Fashions in Los Angeles and Mendocino, California, as well as co-owner of the Spreckels Mansion Inn and the Archbishops Mansion Inn in San Francisco. Shannon has been recognized for his contributions to the field of quilting, including being the first male winner of the American Quilter's Society Best of Show Award in 1993. He is also a co-founder of the Shannon-Ross scholarship endowment fund and a member of the National Quilting Association. Shannon's quilts often deal with themes of death and commemoration, and he has been recognized for his use of textiles as a medium for artistic expression.
