Place: Arnhem Or Dordrecht
Biography:
Joris Abrahamsz. van der Haagen was a Dutch Golden Age painter specialized in landscapes. He was born in Arnhem or Dordrecht and started his drawing career in Arnhem, probably learning to paint from his father, the painter Abraham van der Haagen. He moved to the Hague in 1639, joining the Guild of St. Luke in 1643 and becoming honorary citizen of The Hague in 1644. In 1656, he was one of the founding members of the Confrerie Pictura. He is known for his landscapes, especially his views of various cities in the eastern part of the Netherlands. He collaborated with other painters, including Dirck Wyntrack, Paulus Potter, Ludolf Leendertsz de Jongh, Jan Wijnants, and Nicolaes Berchem. According to Houbraken, he used blue ash to make the color green, but this had faded by 1715. Despite this problem, his paintings were sold for high prices. He is buried at The Hague.
