Biography:
Joseph Fischer was a painter and engraver from Vienna. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown with Johann Christian Brand and Jacob Matthias Schmutzer. In 1802 he went to Paris where he worked on an edition of Racine's works published between 1801 and 1805, as well as on the 'Musée Filhol' set. He then moved to London in 1803, producing lithographies for the collections of Prince Esterhazy. Upon his return to Vienna, he was appointed professor of landscape drawing and etching at the Academy in 1821. Fischer is known for his paintings and engravings such as 'The Christ in the Temple', 'The Woman Adultress' and portraits including that of Correggio.
