Biography:

Julian Rappaport is an American psychologist born in Dūkštas, Lithuania in 1947. He is known for introducing the concept of empowerment into social work and social psychiatry. Rappaport received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester and has worked in the field of community psychology and social psychiatry since 1977. He is a recipient of the American Psychological Association's Division of Community Psychology Distinguished Career Award and the Seymour B. Sarason Award for his contributions to human services, education, and community research and action. Rappaport is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Urbana.
