Biography:

Julius Wilhelm Mantel was a German artist born in Berlin in 1820 and died in 1896. He was a modeler and worked mainly in Berlin. He is known for his earthenware dishes, such as the one in the V&A collections, made in 1865 by the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin. He also produced religious art, satire, and Reformation propaganda, and made a significant contribution to the history of book design. He is considered one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century.
