Laurits Regner Tuxen was a Danish painter and sculptor specializing in figure painting. He was also associated with the Skagen Painters. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1853, Tuxen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art from 1868 to 1872, along with Peder Severin Krøyer.

Early Career and Education

Tuxen's early career was marked by his studies in Paris under Léon Bonnat from 1875 to 1876 and again from 1877 to 1878. He first visited Skagen in 1870, returning on several occasions. In the 1880s and 1890s, he traveled widely, painting portraits for Europe's royal families, including Christian IX of Denmark and Queen Victoria.

Artistic Style and Notable Works

Tuxen's artistic style was characterized by his lively and well-characterized portraits, including his self-portrait in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. He also created portrait groups, such as one of P. S. Krøyer and Michael Ancher. Tuxen's landscapes, particularly those from Skagen, are notable for their use of color and light.
