George R. Lawrence was an American photographer born in Joliet, Illinois in 1869. He is best known for his innovative large-format cameras and his aerial views, which he began taking in 1900. Lawrence used a variety of methods to capture his aerial images, including ladders, towers, balloons, and even kites. His most famous photograph is likely 'Shooting the Chicago Fire', taken in 1906. Lawrence's work was not limited to aerial views; he also took portraits, including a famous series of photographs of Theodore Roosevelt. Lawrence died in 1938.
