Li Zhaodao

Biography:

Li Zhaodao was a Chinese painter during the Tang dynasty. He was the son of Li Sixun, a Chinese noble and painter of landscapes. Li Zhaodao was a student at the imperial court's school of paintings, where he was noticed by Emperor Huizong of Song, who saw Wang's talent and personally taught him. He is considered by Dong Qichang to be the founder of the Northern school of landscape painting. Li Zhaodao used brightly colored mineral pigments, especially azurite blue and malachite green. His technique was meticulous and detailed so that large works such as murals might take months to complete. One of his most famous works is 'Emperor Xuanzong s Flight to Shu'.
