Liu Dan is a Chinese artist born in Nanjing, China in 1953. He is a living master of ink painting, having studied Confucian classics, poetry, and calligraphy with his grandfather from a young age. He later studied at the Jiangsu Chinese Painting Institute in Nanjing. Liu Dan has helped to revive a millennia-old painting practice, the appreciation of scholar-stones, through his intricate depictions of these objects. His work is both scientific and spiritual, embodying Daoist principles of yin and yang energies. Liu Dan's artistic and philosophical goals remain consistent throughout his varied artistic styles, as he seeks to surpass superficial issues of style and capture the true essence of his subject.
