Liu Dan is a Chinese artist born in Nanjing, China in 1953. He is a living master of ink painting, having studied Confucian classics, poetry, and calligraphy with his grandfather from a young age. He later studied at the Jiangsu Chinese Painting Institute in Nanjing. Liu Dan has helped to revive a millennia-old painting practice, the appreciation of scholar-stones, through his intricate depictions of these objects. His work is both scientific and spiritual, embodying Daoist principles of yin and yang energies.
