Biography:
Marcelo Grassmann De Oliveira was a renowned Brazilian engraver and draughtsman, born on September 23, 1925, and passed away on June 21, 2013. Initially interested in sculpture, Grassmann became a wood engraver in the 1940s and later gained fame as a metal engraver and draughtsman in the 1950s.
Grassmann's work was influenced by Austrian artist Alfred Kubin and Brazilian engravers Oswaldo Goeldi and Livio Abramo. He developed his own unique style, characterized by dreamlike figures, including knights, maidens, death, horses, crabs, and other fantastic creatures. His drawings and engravings are highly regarded for their technical skill and imaginative compositions.
Grassmann won several international first prizes, including the I Salon of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (1953), the III Biennale of São Paulo (1955), and the XXXI Biennale of Venice (1958), where he received a prize for sacred art. He also participated in the III Biennale for Graphic Arts in Florence (1972).
