Biography:

Marek Sobczyk is a Polish painter, performer, and teacher born in Warsaw, Poland in 1955. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw between 1976 and 1981 under Stefan Gierowski. In the years 1982-1988, he taught art at his home university. Sobczyk was involved in Gruppa, an artist group, and co-wrote its newsletter 'Oh well' ('Oj dobrze już'). He worked on the polychromy of the Neo Greek-Catholic Church of St. Nicholas, Kostomloty in the Podlaskie Voivodeship between 1985 and 1989 with Ryszard Grzyb. In 1986, he went for a scholarship to West Berlin. Sobczyk lectured at the private Art School in Warsaw, founded and run by Jarosław Modzelewski and Marek Sobczyk in 1991/1992. Since c.1992-93, he runs a painting studio at the University of Zielona Góra. Sobczyk's works have been exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the Center for Contemporary Art in Ujazdów Castle, Warsaw, and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
