Master Theodoric, also known as Magister Theodoricus, was a Bohemian painter born in Prague, Czech Republic, around 1328. He is the best-documented Bohemian Gothic painter and was the favorite court painter of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor. Theodoric's work is considered the chief representative of the phase of International Gothic known as 'the Soft style'.

Life and Work

Theodoric's life and work are well-documented, with his first mention in 1348 as a member of the Prague painters' confraternity. He was already recognized as a master painter by 1359, when he was appointed as the imperial painter to Charles IV.
