Biography:
Michelle V. Agins is an award-winning photographer who was born in Chicago in 1958. She is the second Black female photographer to join The New York Times, where she has been a staff photographer since 1989. Before that, she worked at the Charlotte Observer and was the personal photographer for Harold Washington, the first Black mayor of Chicago. She has received numerous awards for her work, including an honorary doctoral degree from Dominican University and the Joseph Spragg Memorial Award from the National Press Photographers Association. In 2021, she was inducted into the Black Journalists Hall of Fame by the National Association of Black Journalists, and in 2023, she received the lifetime achievement award from the Newswomen’s Club of New York. She is known for her ability to capture unforgettable stories through her photography.
