Biography:
Michiel Versteegh was a Dutch painter who was born in 1756. He started his career as a painter and was tutored by Michiel Versteegh. He started with copying works of famous artists, but developed into a landscape painter, with his own compositions of landscapes often with cattle. He received a Prix de Rome in 1807 and travelled to Paris and Rome. He settled definitively in Rome in 1810 and became a professor of fine arts. He was made an honorary member of the Koninklijke Academie voor beeldende kunsten te Amsterdam and of several Italian painter academies. He never returned to the Netherlands, but did submit works for exhibitions in the Netherlands, which gained him wide recognition. He died in Rome in 1843.
