Biography:

Nenko Dimitrov Balkanski was born on September 20, 1907, in Kazanlak. He studied with Chudomir at the Kazanlak Student Association 'Painter'. He graduated in Painting at the Academy of Arts in Sofia under Prof. Nikola Marinov and Prof. Boris Mitov in 1930. He specialized (1939-1940) in France, Italy, and Germany. He worked as a painting teacher in the countryside and in Sofia. He began his career in the 1930s. In 1937 he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Paris Exhibition for Landscape 'Through the Window' considered an outstanding achievement in painting. He is excited about the lives of ordinary people – they are his inspirations in art, his favorite models. His most famous works are: The Family (1936), The Worker’s Family (1940), Class III (1938), The Woman with the Medal (1937), 'Georgi Dimitrov in prison – 1918' (1949), 'Portrait of the composer DP Ivanov' (1952), 'Portrait of Valeska' (1946), 'The boy with the mundharmonica' (1943), 'Lady’s Portrait' (1950). His works are located in the National Art Gallery, the Art Galleries in Kazanlak and Ruse, as well as in Germany, Czechoslovakia.
