Nicolaes Visscher I was a prominent Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher born in Amsterdam in 1618. He was the son of Claes Janszoon Visscher, who established the family's publishing firm and cemented their reputation as some of the most prominent Dutch mapmakers for nearly a century.

Early Life and Career

Visscher's father, Claes Janszoon Visscher, was a well-known cartographer and publisher in Amsterdam. It is likely that Nicolaes Visscher I learned the trade from his father and possibly even worked with other notable cartographers of the time, such as Pieter van den Keer and Jacodus Hondius. After his father's death, Nicolaes Visscher I took over the family business and continued to produce high-quality maps and engravings.

Notable Works

Some of Nicolaes Visscher I's most notable works include his engraved double hemisphere map, Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accuratissima Tabula, created in 1658 in Amsterdam. This map is an early example of highly decorated Dutch world maps and showcases Visscher's skill as a cartographer and engraver.

Legacy

Nicolaes Visscher I's legacy as a cartographer and publisher was continued by his son, Nicolaes Visscher II, who worked with him and took over the family business after his death in 1679.
