Biography:

The Achilles Painter was a vase-painter active in Athens, Greece from approximately 470-425 BC. He was a late pupil of the Berlin Painter and is attributed over 200 vases by J.D. Beazley. The Achilles Painter is best known for his red-figure and white-ground lekythoi, and in his middle phase, he decorated more open forms. He was a master of the white lekythos, with some of his best work being considered masterpieces of ancient drawing. The Achilles Painter had many notable students, including the Phiale Painter, the Westreenen Painter, the Persephone Painter, the Clio Painter, the Loeb Painter, and the Dwarf Painter. He is described by J.D. Beazley as having a 'sober beauty' in his red-figure vases and reaching the height of his best white lekythoi, which are among the masterpieces of ancient drawing. In 1962, Greece issued a stamp featuring the decoration of an Achilles Painter white-ground lekythos.
