Biography:

Ogawa Shomin was a Japanese lacquer artist born in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1847. He was apprenticed at the age of sixteen to the maki-e artist Nakayama Komin. Shomin was known for his ability to imitate old lacquer pictures. He became the first instructor in the lacquer department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1887. Shomin died in 1891 at the age of 44. His works are highly valued for their technical skill and artistic beauty.
