Biography:

Wang Jiyuan, also known as Owner Of Liao Dong Ge, was a renowned Chinese artist born in Wujin, Jiangsu, China in 1893. He co-founded the Juelan Society along with Ni Yide, Pang Xunqin, and Chen Cheng-po, promoting innovation in Chinese arts under the motto “fierce passion, firm rationality”. Wang's artistic journey began at Jiangsu Second Normal School before entering the Shanghai College of Art (later changed to Shanghai Fine Arts School) in 1913.

Early Years and Career

Wang Jiyuan was good at composing watercolor works in both Western and Chinese styles, with an emphasis on plein air. He was active in the Shanghai art circles in his early years, traveling to Europe and Japan to study. In 1918, he co-founded the Tian-Ma Society along with fellow art teachers Liu Haisu and Wang Yachen, advocating for modern art ideas. In 1928, he founded the Yiyuan Painting Institute, providing opportunities for young artists to further their studies. In 1932, Wang co-founded the Juelan Society along with Ni Yide, Pang Xunqin, and Chen Cheng-po. The Juelan Society promoted innovation in Chinese arts, and Wang's contributions to the art world were significant. He taught Chinese painting and contributed to middle school art textbooks, including Watercolor Painting and Fundamentals of Western Painting Technique, which he co-authored with Ni Yide.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1941, Wang Jiyuan settled in the United States, later returning to Taiwan as an overseas Chinese. He hosted an exhibition there and donated his works to notable collections, such as Taiwan's National Palace Museum and National Museum of History. In January 1964, Wang Jiyuan died of illness in New York. Four years later, his family members brought the ashes of Mr. and Mrs. Wang back to Taiwan, where a sea burial ceremony was held. Wang Jiyuan's legacy can be seen in his contributions to Chinese modern art, and his work continues to inspire artists today. His emphasis on innovation and experimentation has had a lasting impact on the art world.
