Penelope Umbrico is an American artist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1957. She is best known for her work that appropriates images found using search engines and picture sharing websites. Her art often utilizes the grid format to imply non-hierarchical organization in massive collections of objects. Umbrico's work has been exhibited in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. She has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Her monographs have been published by Aperture NYC and RVB Books Paris.
