Peter the Great (June 9 [O.S. May 30] 1672 – January 8 [O.S. December 28] 1725), also known as Peter I or Peter Alexeyevich, was a Russian emperor who ruled from 1682 until his death in 1725. He is known for his numerous reforms, which brought Russia into the modern era. He was also a skilled military leader and expanded the Russian Empire to include parts of Ukraine, Belarus, and Finland. Peter was born in Moscow and was the son of Tsar Alexis I and his second wife, Natalya Naryshkina. He ascended to the throne at the age of 10, but his half-sister Sophia served as regent until he came of age. In 1689, Peter forced Sophia to retire and took full control of the government. He began his reign by modernizing the Russian military and expanding its territory. He also introduced Western-style reforms in education, science, and industry. Peter was known for his strong leadership and his ability to inspire loyalty in his subjects. He died in 1725 and was succeeded by his wife, Catherine I.
