Van Der Hulst's artistic journey began under the guidance of Willem Doudijns in The Hague in 1668.

Van Der Hulst traveled to Rome from 1674 to 1677, where he focused on painting flowers and joined the Bentvueghels with the nickname 'Zonnebloem'. This period had a significant impact on his style, as evident in his still life paintings. Upon returning to Holland, he resided in The Hague from 1681-1683 and joined the local Guild of Saint Luke.
