Biography:
Prince Rupert of the Rhine (1574-1644) was a member of the House of Wittelsbach, the former Bavarian dynasty that ruled over territories including the Electorate of Bavaria, the Electoral Palatinate, the Electorate of Cologne, Holland, Zeeland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Bohemia, and Greece. He was born in Prague, Czech Republic, and was the son of Frederick I, Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth of England, the daughter of King James I of England. Prince Rupert was a prominent military commander during the Thirty Years' War and the English Civil War, and was also known for his patronage of the arts and sciences. He died in 1644.
