Biography:
Raymond Depardon is a French photographer, photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. He was born in Villefranche-sur-Saône, France in 1942. Depardon began his career as a photojournalist in the early 1960s, traveling to conflict zones including Algeria, Vietnam, Biafra, and Chad. In 1966, he co-founded the photojournalism agency Gamma, becoming its director in 1973. He left Gamma in 1977 to become a Magnum Photos associate, and a full member in 1979. Depardon has received numerous awards for his work, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024 for his film 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig'. He is known for his humanistic approach to photography and filmmaking, and his compassionate view of human suffering.
