Biography:
Richard Charles Wandel (1938-2017) was an American photographer and archivist. He was born in New York City and died in Washington D.C. Wandel was a member of the Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) and was active in the LGBTQ+ rights movement in the 1970s. He was a founding member of the GAA's Photography Committee and documented many of the group's events and actions. Wandel's photographs from this time period are an important record of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States. In addition to his work as a photographer, Wandel was also an archivist and worked for many years at the Library of Congress. He was a member of the Society of American Archivists and was active in the archival community. Wandel's work as an archivist and his contributions to the field of archives were recognized with several awards and honors, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of American Archivists in 2005.
