Roberto Gil de Montes is a Mexican American artist born on 1950 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He is known for his figurative and landscape paintings that explore the hidden images and forgotten or imagined stories of the culture he grew up with. His works often depict fragments of pre-Columbian pottery found within La Peñita, a fishing town on the Pacific coast of the Mexican state of Nayarit where Gil de Montes currently resides and works. He was influenced by the murals of José Clemente Orozco and the celebrations surrounding Día de Muertos at an early age in his hometown. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous key galleries and museums such as Kurimanzutto, Mexico City, Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles, United States, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
