Roger Vandercruse, also known as Roger Lacroix, was a French ébéniste whose highly refined furniture spans the rococo and the early neoclassical styles. He was born in Paris in 1728 and died in the same city in 1799. Vandercruse was of Low Countries stock and was part of a network of outstanding craftsmen in Paris. Vandercruse specialized in meubles volants, small fine pieces that could be shifted about to suit the activities of the moment, such as the lady's writing desks called bonheurs du jour. He excelled in the production of commodes and was known for his highly decorative and intricate marquetry and bronze work.
