Biography:
Romero Britto, a renowned Brazilian Neo-Pop artist, has been making waves in the art world with his vibrant and colorful artworks that blend elements of Pop Art, Cubism, and Graffiti. Born in Recife, Brazil, in 1963, Britto drew inspiration from his underprivileged childhood and limited access to art supplies to create a unique visual language that communicates hope, happiness, and love.
Growing up in poverty, Britto was influenced by the works of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, which he studied during his trip to Europe in 1983. This exposure to European art had a profound impact on his style, as seen in his use of bold patterns and vibrant colors. In 1988, he moved to Miami, where his current studio remains.
Britto's first major commission was to design artwork for Absolut Vodka in 1989. Since then, his designs have been used by prominent brands such as Disney, BMW, IBM, and Apple Computers. His artwork has also been featured on a variety of consumer goods, including Barbie dolls and pet collars. According to a 2023 documentary, Britto is "the most collected and licensed artist in history." Some of his notable public art installations include Hyde Park, London, the O2 Arena in Berlin, and the John F. Kennedy Airport. He also designed a Miami water park.
Britto's charitable work has supported over 250 organizations. As a conservative, he has hosted fundraisers for Republican presidential candidates Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney. He also publicly supports Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro.
