Biography:

Salote Tawale is an artist of Australian Pacific Islander heritage. She was born in Suva, Fiji Islands and grew up in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Tawale's arts practice explores race, ethnicity and gender in relation to Western cultural values. She works across performance, moving image, painting, and installation, humorously challenging stereotypes. Cultural identity is a central focus in her research. Tawale has exhibited in various institutions including Artspace, Sydney; Photo 2024; and Hawaii Contemporary. She has also participated in the South Project, an initiative that explores potential cultural connections between countries of the South. Tawale's first major solo exhibition was held at Artspace in 2024, titled 'Salote Tawale explores memory, identity, and karaoke'.
