Biography:
Saloua Raouda Choucair was a Lebanese painter and sculptor. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Choucair displayed precocious artistic talent from an early age. She took art lessons with Omar Onsi for three months, and that was ultimately the only formal art training she had received. Her travels to Egypt in 1943 and her exposure to Islamic art significantly influenced her artistic production. Her sculptures are precise and geometric, and she explores principles of Islamic design and Arabic poetry within a modernist, non-objective artistic lens. She was one of the most prominent figures of Lebanese modernism.
