Biography:

Samuel Yellin was an American master blacksmith and metal designer, born in Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Ukraine in 1884. He was educated at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and later became one of the nation's most sought-after creators of architectural ironwork by the 1920s.

Early Life and Education

At the age of eleven, Yellin was apprenticed to a master ironsmith in Ukraine. In 1900, he completed his apprenticeship and traveled through Europe before arriving in Philadelphia in 1905. He took classes at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and soon became an instructor there.

Career

In 1909, Yellin opened his own metalsmith shop, which later became a renowned firm under the name Samuel Yellin Metalworkers. During the building boom of the 1920s, the company employed as many as 250 workers and created numerous commissions for prominent architects. Yellin's works can be found in some of the finest buildings in America.
